This week marks the beginning of my second year as a classroom teacher, and my second year here in Kuwait. Last year I taught 10th grade US History and this year I have moved up to IB History 1 & 2 and TOK 1, 2, and Elective. This summer I worked on quite a few things that I wished to improve in the classroom. One of these was the ease of communication between the students and between the students and me. Last year, I was often inaccessible to my students outside of school. However, I wanted this to change, while still keeping my boundaries of communication outside of the school hours so as to not disturb me during sleep or time relaxing.
After looking though some options I decided to be accessible to my students via email and twitter. I created a school gmail account (as my school email failed to work often) and a school Twitter. This would allow me to be available for my students when they need me, as questions often come up while students are completing homework or projects. Not to mention, it will make contact easier in school while I am busy or out of the room.
To make this communication easier, I created a digital business card, for the class, that could be found by scanning a simple QR code. This QR has been placed on the corner of each desk and on the outside of my classroom door, incase I am not present. When you scan the QR code, you will be taken to the digital business card, offering a link to the class website I developed, my email, Twitter, and YouTube pages.
Throughout the school year, I will stress how valuable of a tool this is with the hopes of getting student participation. I can then assess if and how it is benefiting my students and how I can improve communications with students even more. I am very excited to see how these QR codes go over with my new classes!
