Teaching is a Learning Profession
Teachers continue to learn and grow as they provide access to learning for self and others. Teachers learn as they use past life experience to solve professional problems in the present and to imagine a better future. Teachers learn in collaboration with others. Outside of the classroom, teachers are always reading, and everything they read is filtered through their teaching.
Student Feedback Survey
As I continue to learn and grow as an educator, it is important that I utilize the comments, opinions, and suggestions from those who see my teaching. Those who witness me teach more than anyone else are my students. Unfortunately, students are not always given the opportunity to tell me what they think about my teaching. Rather than asking, I have previously made assumptions based on how students learn best during each type of lesson and the outcomes of their various formative and summative assessments. I began thinking that students need an anonymous method to voice their comments about my teaching. At the end of this marking period, I developed a student survey that asked students about my teaching and their time spent in social studies over the past ten weeks.
By giving students an outlet to speak their minds about class and my teaching, I am not only giving them an opportunity to speak freely and be honest, but this will ultimately benefit them. By using the comments and criticisms of students, I can learn about their educational needs and my teaching styles. In the end, I can adapt my teaching to meet their needs to a greater degree.

Professional Development for Student Teachers
While student teaching in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District, the assistant principals of the district’s middle schools organized and provided professional development sessions for the middle school interns. These various PD sessions were intended to educate me and the other student teachers about different aspects of teaching, including working with parents and special education students. They also provided assistance in searching, applying, and interviewing for teaching positions. To conduct these PD sessions, the assistant principals had the assistance of administrators and other support staff from within the district.
I found these sessions to be incredibly beneficial. Because there are so few interns within the middle schools of WLCSD, the sessions were very personalized, and I was thus able to make connections with important people from the district and to apply the PD material directly to my situation. I believe that the other student teachers, who attended the PD sessions, benefitted as much as I did. The variety of topics and the very intelligent presenters led for very valuable experiences.

My Personal Growth as an Educator
To grow as an educator and to become a more effective teacher, I have tracked my professional growth over the course of this academic year. While I utilized my own interpretation of my teaching, I also looked to the evaluation of others, including my mentor teacher, field instructor, students, other teachers in the building, and administrators. By acquiring a diversity of interpretation on my teaching, I was able to evaluate my professional growth from many different angles and in terms of many different teaching aspects, including classroom management, instruction, lesson development, and more.
The evaluation of my growth of a teacher is something that will continue for the rest of my career. In order to become the best teacher I can be, I will continue to use a variety of interpretations as I look for growth and areas in which I struggle. As a new teacher, I was happy to have seen significant growth in myself. I will work tirelessly to ensure that this growth does nothing but continue.
