World Issues - 9/10th Grade
Human Rights
Human Rights in the News
A major part of my World Issues elective is connecting what we have learned to the world around us. During this unit, students discovered what human rights are and how they are either practiced or denied in the world today.
For this activity, students worked in groups of four to read the daily news and find examples of human rights. They were required to find four examples of current events; human rights being practiced, being denied, being protected, and in conflict.
This is not the only time in which students looked through the news to build connecting with the material they had learned. For this particular activity, however, they enjoyed working in groups to discuss the current event and why it did or did not relate to human rights.
